Pastor Steve

Pastor: Rev. Stephen Bascom

Reverend Stephen Bascom grew up in a 21-member family, on a small farm in Nottingham, NH. Feeling a call to ministry at the age of 5, awakened to Christ as Savior, he received a baptism of the Holy Spirit and has served as a United Methodist pastor for the past 30 years in churches in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He earned his B.A. at the University of New Hampshire and his MDiv and MRE from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1990. His wife, Jude, recently disabled by degenerative arthritis, was an educator in public and private schools and a director of theater throughout southern New Hampshire. They have three grown children: Stephen, Jr. (wife, Melissa and son, Jonah), Elle, and Gabe (fiancé, Jess and sons, Mason and Taylor).

Organist: Judith Kuhn

Judith Kuhn grew up in Lansing, Michigan and received her degrees from Central Michigan University and Wayne State University. She spent ten years teaching French, English and Choral Music in the suburbs of Detroit. In 1969 she moved to Rumford and taught choral and general music for the next 25 years. She has a daughter who lives in Gorham. Judy directed the RAAPA Chorus for 45 years while at the same time playing the organ and directing choirs in several churches in the River Valley Area, most recently at the Rumford UMC. "I am very excited to be part of the music program in a church which has so much music history and so many people involved." Judy now lives at Schooner Estates.

 

 

Caroline

Choir Director: Caroline Coffin

As Choir Director, Caroline Young Coffin brings passion for music, having also shared her gifts with the congregation since 1996 as a soloist, as part of the Wesleyan Singers, and by leading children’s music in choirs and Vacation Bible School. She has a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Southern Maine, was previously the Church's Director of Christian Education, and is a trained Godly Play teacher. Caroline seeks to know and share God’s love through her work with adults, youth and children. She lives in Auburn with her husband Dana and children Edith, Mary, and John.

 

 

Mitch

Special Music Coordinator: Mitch Thomas

Singer, pianist, songwriter, Mitchell Clyde Thomas of Durham has been entertaining audiences in Maine and around New England for more than 40 years, beginning as a very young side-kick to his fiddle-playing grandfather. For nearly 30 years, he has been sharing and leading music in some way or other in this church. For 30 years, Mitch has been the director of the Music-Theatre camps for youth at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop, and for many years he directed children's choirs here in his home church. Mitch provides special music occasions here, and is the choir director and organist at our sister church, Calvary UMC in Lewiston. Over the past 10 years, he has been the Music Director for the New England Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is very active in Lewiston-Auburn's Community Little Theatre, where he directs some of their shows and has performed in scores of them over the past two decades.

 

 

William

Bell Choir Director: William Buzza

William "Bill" Buzza has directed the handbell program at the church since 1993. Bill first started ringing handbells in the youth handbell choir at the Grant Memorial U.M.C. in Presque Isle, Maine, and has been involved in the art of handbell ringing ever since. Bill earned his B.M. degree in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine in 1993 and his M.S. Ed degree in Educational Leadership from the University of New England in 2010. Bill teaches music at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine and has guest conducted at various honors music festivals and Maine handbell conferences.

 

 

Joan

Secretary: Joan Spitzform (Office: office@auburnmethodist.org)

Joan and her husband, Roy currently reside in Poland. Joan has been a Certified Lay Speaker for the UMC in both New Jersey and Maine since 1995. She was formerly the Pastor of the Bolsters Mills UMC in Harrison, Maine.

 

 

Peter

Custodian: Peter Poliquin

Peter was born and raised in Lewiston. He graduated from Lewiston High School. He has two daughters which are both teachers. Jennifer teaches 6th grade at St. Dom's and Nicole teaches History at eavitt Area High School. He also has a grandson named Charlie. Peter enjoys the outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and hunting. When he was younger he participated in amateur boxing. He has been working for the UMC for 15 years.

 

 

Lucille

Parish Nurse: Lucille Webber

Lucille Webber, R.N., M.S.N is a graduate from the Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Southern Maine. She has worked as a staff nurse in medical/surgical nursing, Supervisor of maternal child health, Home Care and as a nursing instructor for 10 years at CMMC School of Nursing. She enjoys traveling and going on the annual mission trip to South Carolinia. She lives in Auburn with her two cats, George and Topper.

 

 

Cherie

Church School Superintendent: Cherie Downing

Cherie lives in Poland, Maine and is married to Stan (Butch) Downing. She has been a member of UMCA for more than 15 years, has sung in the choir and has served on numerous Church committees. Cherie retired after 37 years of teaching at Minot Consolidated School, including 25 years in Grade 4 and the remaining years as the Language Arts Teacher for Grades 6, 7 and 8.

 

 

Dayna

Church Nursery Provider: Dayna Bennett

Dayna Bennett is 18 years old and grew up in Leeds, Maine. She graduated from Leavitt Area High School in 2014, and attends Central Maine Community College four days a week while working full-time at a Day Care. She majors in Early Childhood Development and hopes to open her own in-home Child Care. She loves children and caring for them at Church brings her great joy.
