Good afternoon parish,
May the peace of Christ anchor your hearts in the joy of this day! On this last Sunday of the summer, we will linger with psalm 19 which is a beautiful description of how God’s instruction guides and delivers us from trouble. In fact, the psalm concludes with the prayer I generally offer before preaching each Sunday: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of (our) hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our strength and redeemer.” Our handbell choir will offer a prelude to help us soar to God’s presence where we may grow in truth and grace.
I invite you to our first church public supper on Saturday, September 21st, 5 pm, UMCA, before which, the Park Avenue Pickers will play. On Monday, October 7th, 6-8 pm (with supper beforehand), UMC of Auburn will host a welcome introduction to our new bishop, Thomas Bickerton. Also, on Sunday, October 20th, I invite you to join us for our annual church conference which will be at 2:30 pm at the Lisbon UMC.
I leave you with a bit of September verse from poet Helen Hunt Jackson: ” The goldenrod is yellow; the corn is turning brown; the trees in apple orchards with fruit are bending down…By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather, and autumn’s best of cheer. But none of all this beauty which floods the earth and air is unto me the secret which makes September fair. ‘Tis a thing which I remember; to name it thrills me yet; one day of one September I never can forget.”
Make this day memorable. It is God’ gift in the moment. Let’s make it count!
