Weekly Greeting: Nov 27

Advent Grace to you all,
The first Sunday of Advent often anticipates the second coming of Christ, for the one who ascended into the heavens will one day return to earth in the same way (Acts 1:11b, NRSV). The HOPE candle which we light on this day pairs our hope in Christ’s return with the hope of ancient Israel for deliverance. We anticipate a reality which is not yet, but certainly on its way. In truth, we can live without many things; hope is not one of them.
Tomorrow at worship (in person at 8:15 & 10 am; online live-stream at 10 am (church facebook page and website post, www.auburnmethodist.org), we will begin a new advent journey, anticipate Christ’s return, and WATCH for signs of God’s kingdom within and here on earth. We will anchor the journey with a story called “The Christmas Scout.” We will also join in a denomination-wide, free-will offering to support UM Student Day, providing scholarships for secondary education.

In addition, we will light a candle in loving memory of Stan Rice who passed away early Friday morning. Please hold Marilyn and their family in prayer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 5th at Finley Funeral Home, 15 Church Street, Livermore Falls, ME. There will be a calling hour from 11 am to 12n, with military honors and service at 12 n. Due to state mandate, attendance at the service will be limited to 50, including family members which number 25.

As we look to December, plans are underway for a virtual Christmas concert (posting to be announced), live, drive-thru nativity (12/20, 4-5 pm, UMCA) and Christmas Eve Candlelight services (in person family service at 5 pm, Zoom Lessons & Carols service at 9 pm, and a Conference-produced service). We express gratitude to both Kim Visbaras and Janet Irish as the complete terms of chairing Church Council and Nurture Committee, respectively. THANK YOU!

I have attached to the weekly greeting email tomorrow’s Worship Guide, last week’s message, and an update on Missions Opportunities for any who wish them. An invitation link will follow soon to a zoom Sunday, 2 pm Advent Devotional/Conversation opportunity for any who wish to participate. All you need are four candles to light as we progress through the four Sundays of Advent.

I trust you had a safe, blessed Thanksgiving, and want to thank all who helped with our Thankful Pie Project (pie bakers, pie servers, coordinators, and deliverers). It was a joy to ‘yard-visit’ with church family during this challenging time!
God’ grace be with you,
Pastor Steve Bascom, UMC of Auburn
