Greetings Parish,
The author Pearl Buck once observed, “Love cannot be forced, love cannot be coaxed and teased. It comes out of heaven, unasked and unsought.” As we arrive at Baptism of the Lord Sunday, I find myself reflecting on Pearl’s observation. As Jesus rises from the water, the Bible tells us “a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘You are my son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness.'” (Luke 3:22, CEB) It is an affirmation for Jesus, but it is also a reminder to us that he is the real deal—one who carries words of abundant life, on earth and in heaven!
Tomorrow, we will celebrate the life of former UMCA organist Judy Kuhn (11 am, UMCA). Her faithful service touched the lives of so many and she will be dearly missed. On Sunday, we will renew our baptismal witness and receive Kathy Brann as a new member of UMCA (transferring from Peoples UMC, S. Portland). We will also hear a presentation from Board members of UM Economic Ministry which serves impoverished towns in western Maine and pray for our sisters and brothers in Southern California.
Next Saturday (January 18th, UMCA, 5 pm), we will gather for a church public supper, serenaded by the Park Avenue Pickers.
